What is SpriteGen?

SpriteGen is a browser-based AI sprite creator for game developers and indie creators. You describe a character and an action, choose a camera view and a visual style, and the tool returns a sprite sheet as a transparent PNG with evenly spaced frames, ready to import into a game engine. The site says most generations finish in about a minute and that no animation skills or rigging pipeline are required.

How to use SpriteGen?

  1. Type who is doing what, for example a knight swinging a sword, in the prompt box.
  2. Pick a perspective such as side view, a style such as 16-bit, and a facing direction. Actions include idle, walk, run, jump, attack, cast, hurt, death, and fly.
  3. Choose image or video mode, a frame count of 6, 8, or 12, and a cell size. Options range from 16 to 128 pixel cells, plus an HD format.
  4. Generate, watch the animated loop preview, then download the PNG sprite sheet.

Key features of SpriteGen

  • Twelve built-in styles in two groups: pixel art (16-bit, retro handheld, cozy pixel, dark pixel, cute pixel) and illustrated (modern cartoon, classic cartoon, action anime, soft anime, chibi, flat vector, 3D toon)
  • Live animated preview before download
  • Six and eight frame sheets sit in one row, while twelve frames form a 4 by 3 grid
  • A free sprite sheet maker for packing frames you already have

SpriteGen also offers separate pages for turning an animated GIF into a sprite sheet, generating a single transparent PNG for an item, NPC, or icon, and drawing pixel art by hand on a 16, 32, or 64 pixel grid before exporting a PNG.
